Backing Better Backs has been set up by YUUworld. Through our customer contact, we have become more aware and concerned about the lack of awareness and guidelines surrounding back care for children and we were shocked to hear that the UK is one of the only countries not to have guidelines about how much children carry on their backs to school.
We commissioned a piece of research to find out how children are carrying their bags to school, what sort of bags they use and whether parents know about the best type of bag. We questioned over 1200 parents and grandparents and the results were quite shocking.
Many children are not carrying their bags properly or are not provided with the correct style of bag, and alarmingly almost a quarter of respondents said that on occasion their child had suffered from or complained of a 'bad back'.
The UK government needs to create guidelines about children’s back care so that we can all be informed and make the right choices for our children. In Italy, for example, a law was issued in 2009 by the Department for Education, stating that a schoolbag must weigh between 10 and 15 per cent of the child’s weight. We feel there's so much more to do in the UK to protect our children’s backs.
